[[Image:seafarers-memorial.jpg|right]] [[Image:seafarers-memorial-closeup.jpg|right]] After investigating seafarers' memorials world-wide the Trust commissioned local Nelson artist, Grant Palliser, to create a symbolic bronze statue in recognition of those fishermen and women, as well as all others whose livelihood is earned as professional seafarers. The three metre high bronze statue is the dominant feature on Sunderland Marine Pier and is visible to seafarers entering and leaving the port of Nelson. [[Image:seafarers-memorial-sunset.jpg]] Concept plans of the statue were completed in September 1997 after much discussion between the artist and the Trust committee. It was generally agreed that the statue would be more representative of the modern seafarer rather than the oilskin clad, bearded old salt of yesteryear. Instead Grant Palliser created a seafarer of today with an urgent and concerned expression, anixiously looking out to sea to another vessel in trouble or coming to his rescue, or a possible place to shelter. His message is urgent. Together Grant and his wife spent over 1800 hours on the construction and he is quick to point out that the generous and tireless work of friends, associates and volunteers were crucial to the resulting success.
